99. Urban Guru Cafe – Only One

The mind wants more. The idea of ‘self’ wants to survive beyond this moment and yet this moment is all there is and the idea of self has NO being and there is actually no ‘me’ in this immediacy of seeing-knowing. This is actually very obvious right now. You have to think about a ‘me’ before it ‘appears’. The pure seeing is duration-less. Uninterrupted observing is happening. The mind is time – transient appearances only. This immediacy is timeless.

The clear pointing on this site does not date. It is fresh as the immediate impressions that register each moment. We encourage you to explore as many of these programs as you wish to. If you are waiting for a new program, please start listening to those programs you have not yet listened to. Even though the programs are presented in an entertaining format, the essence of the pointing is sharp and cutting and ever fresh. No one knows what ‘information’ will bring about a clear insight for you. One may hear a pointer many times and somehow it does not register with its full meaning, then suddenly it cuts to the core. Therefore we encourage anyone who resonates with a particular ‘message’ to listen as often as you can. The programs will not dull or get stale. Something ‘sinks in’ and in an unexpected moment a clear pointer registers with a clarity that dispenses the ‘old view’ and it leaves you present and aware, as you always have been, nakedly aware, of being pure being. In that moment (which can only be this moment) the ‘job’ has been done (and nothing has actually happened and nothing was ever done). This naked moment is eternal presence.

The incentive of the Urban Guru Cafe is purely in order for such a moment to open up for you (as it did for me). Once this has ‘happened’ things fall into place in a very different ‘order’ and many beliefs are dispensed with naturally without incident. This has ‘happened’ for many listeners. ” Is there a world outside (of) your knowledge? Can you go beyond what you know? You may postulate a world beyond the mind, but it will remain a concept, unproved and unprovable. Your experience is your proof …and it is valid for you only. Who else can have your experience, when the other person is only as real as he (or she) appears in your experience” – Nisargadatta.

“You have projected onto yourself a world of your own imagination, based on memories, on desires and fears, and you have imprisoned yourself in it. Break the spell and be free.” – Nisargadatta

Where were you on the 6th of January 1980? On that day a few visitors were in a small attic room in the back streets of Bombay, in an area called Khetwadi. They had come from distant places to ask their questions, addressed to one who did not speak English. Somehow word had reached them, that this ‘teacher’ was someone extraordinary. Without a trace of sentiment, Nisargadatta turned many lives around and often with just a few words. Following on from the last program, we present digitally cleaned up audio from the meetings that were held everyday, year after year. This recording features Ramesh Balsekar and S.K. Mullarpattan as the main translators. These programs may require a few careful ‘listenings’ to catch everything they offer, but it is all clear, especially if you listen a few times. Many would have loved to have been able to attend the meetings. These recordings give an opportunity that is otherwise not available. Each meeting is unique and the way that Maharaj conducts himself is never predictable. He would not allow anyone to continue asking ‘spiritual kindergarden’ questions. Obviously he was keenly aware of where the visitor was ‘coming from’ and although he never spoke English, except for a word here and there, he probably understood the language reasonably well. That is neither here nor there, as we say. The atmosphere of that small room is captured on these recordings.

“Once you realize that the world is your own projection, you are free of it. You need not free yourself of a world that does not exist, except in your own imagination! However is the picture, beautiful or ugly, you are painting it and you are not bound by it. Realize that there is nobody to force it on you, that it is due to the habit of taking the imaginary to be real. See the imaginary as imaginary and be free of fear.” – Nisargadatta

The ONLY time there ever is is the Immediate Presence which we commonly call NOW.

These programs on Nisargadatta are very potent for those who are interested in this material. It may take a few listenings to get the full potency of the pointing. I myself have been struck by certain passages, by the simple and yet ‘deep’ significance of what Nisargadatta is saying. – Gilbert

Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj - First a recording from 1980 with Ramesh Balsekar translating and then a recording from the 11th of January 1981 in which the voice of S.K. Mullarpattan appears as translator. This is a short selection from a series of tape recordings which I have digitally cleaned up and edited for archival purposes. There may be more to come. Some of the many tapes were used for transcribing purposes by Jean Dunn and Dr. Robert Powell who both produced excellent books on Nisargadatta. The first book ‘I am That’ was transcribe by Maurice Freeman in the early seventies. Dates for all the passages transcribed from the tapes are mentioned in the various books.

This is our second program on Jiddu Krishnamurti. He was discovered and announced as a ‘World Teacher’ by Dr. Annie Besant of the Theosophical Society, he later renounced the position saying that “Truth is a Pathless Land”. This program actually contains certain salient points that are a key to understanding the ‘situation’ we find ourselves in. These points may pass over your head unless you pay close attention. I advise you listen to what he says as often as it takes for them to reveal themselves clearly. The previous program on J. Krishnamurti should also be listened to again if necessary. Remember that it is not about the messenger. The clarity of the pointing is what this is all about. Krishnamurti was often very blunt with his pointing. This program is a stand alone pointer. In effect, as a producer, I have taken the salient points and given them new life in a new form. This program expresses the basics, without all the unnecessary extras. The bare bones of it all is in this presentation.

Kenneth Madden is from Galway, Ireland, and is a relatively unknown ‘speaker’ on Non Duality. That ‘relatively unknown’ is about to change and many will enjoy Kenneth’s expression, simple and direct. This is it – just as it is. He is also an accomplished photographer and you can see some excellent examples of his work on his site. Sure enough ‘Never not Here’ interviewed Kenneth shortly after this program was published.

The Urban Guru Cafe is dedicated to spreading a clear message from a variety of clear ‘speakers’, speakers who do not make compromises or ask for you to believe in them or in anything. The proof that they are genuine is in the fact that many ‘hear’ the message and their habit of seeking slips away silently. Many find William’s expression refreshing and free of a lot of the terminology we are used to. The voice of William is taken from a tape recording that he himself recorded in his study. William’s delivery may appear just a little dated now but what he is saying is from the ever-fresh ‘knowing’ which is authentic and definitely genuine. Many may be surprised to learn that he was sharing this message regularly for many years in their own country, the USA.

The VIEW from ‘the last stepping stone’, on the pathless path, is the same VIEW from ‘the first stepping stone’. This Seeing NOW.

Pointers appear and disappear – what they all point to never appears… and so it never can disappear. Just the same is what you are has never truly appeared or disappeared. Knowing is all that is ‘happening’. Everything appears in the knowing – including the ‘knowing of’, the ‘conscious of’.

You ARE this SEEING-KNOWING-ESSENCE, the knowing of all things, which only ever forms into the transient patterns of ‘a seer’ and ‘the seen‘. The unchanging is what you ARE. This knowing does not need a pattern to associate with and all patterns come and go ‘upon’ the unchanging essence of ‘I am’.

Rodney says: Non-duality isn’t something that’s difficult, “far-off”, or metaphysical (though its sublimeness is without parallel). It is, for the most part, a teaching that points to the fact that self-realization is simply a matter of seeing or understanding that which is immediately before you. There is absolutely no need examine egoic constructs, debate notions of a perceiver and the perceived, or sit cross-legged on a floor or cave until you faint from exhaustion or exposure. Indeed, before you take a single step towards any of those endeavors, you are awareness itself. You are THAT. See the utter and magnificent reality of this as you read these very words. Allow yourself to be paused–Full Stop!–by the beauty and enormity of that fact. Then you will see yourself as Yourself, radiant spaciousness without beginning or end.

On the 27th Sept 2009 – two days ago, Ramesh Balsekar ‘passed away’. The physical body is a transient appearance. For those who feel a heavy weight because of Ramesh’s ‘departure’ – come back to what he was pointing to, in yourself. Your true essence. Joy is in that simplicity of being. The attachment to the guru is a gift – ‘a final teaching’. In that, there is the potential to truly grasp what was being pointed out all along. May all of his followers be delivered quickly and painlessly into their true essence. – Gilbert

“You may think that you are the doer – I assure you that you have never done a thing” – Ramesh – and “According to my concepts” -Ramesh

Ramesh: “What is the significance of the statement ‘No one can get enlightenment’? This is the very root of the teaching. It means that it’s stupid for any so-called master to ask anyone to do anything to achieve or get enlightenment. The core of this simple statement means, according to my concept, that enlightenment is the annihilation of the ‘one’ who ‘wants’ enlightenment. If there is enlightenment – which can only happen because it is the will of God – then it means the ‘one’ who had earlier wanted enlightenment has been annihilated. So no ‘one’ can achieve enlightenment and therefore no ‘one’ can enjoy enlightenment.”

From an interview – Chris Parish to Ramesh – How can we say that we know it is destiny or God’s will? All we know is that certain events take place. Afterward, we can look back on something we did and say, “It just happened,” and if we like, we can call it destiny. But isn’t it more accurate to say that we don’t really know whether it is destiny or not? Saying that we don’t know is different from saying “We know that it is God’s will.” It’s different from saying we know that everything is fixed. You see, it sounds to me like you’re saying that you do know that everything is the will of God.
Ramesh – We don’t know, and that is the bottom line; so if you like, you can drop the concept of destiny and say that nobody can really know anything. Fine!

It is a different slant on the same non-thing.
